¿Deja la vida volar?: La biografía en el documental musical chileno

This article analyses the biographic approach, which has been a prevailing trend within the music documentary film production in Chile. Through an in-depth analysis of El derecho de vivir en paz (Carmen Luz Parot, 1999) and Viola Chilensis (Luis Vera, 2003), two films about Víctor Jara and Violeta Parra respectively, I argue that biographical documentaries work as an intersection of different forms of biography, both written and filmed. Far from offering an objective point of view of the depicted artists, these films articulate a subjective way of seeing these musicians. Using a variety of resources, they offer a point of view in which individuality and a series of topics such as uniqueness, creativity and suffering are central in shaping our understanding of music and its creators.
