Abstract

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is an exercise modality that combines brief periods of maximal effort with intervals of partial recovery. The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of HIIT-based training, compared with a control group, on academic stress in health science students from a university in Chile. Three instruments were used: a sociodemographic questionnaire to verify inclusion criteria and characterize the sample; the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) to identify physical activity levels and sedentary behaviors; and the Academic Stress Inventory SISCO-II. The sample consisted of university students divided into a control group (n = 4) and an experimental group (n = 7), who participated in programmed HIIT sessions during the study period. The results showed a decrease in academic stress levels in the experimental group after the intervention; however, this reduction did not reach statistical significance when compared to the control group. It is concluded that HIIT training generates positive effects on academic stress, but these effects are not sufficient to demonstrate a significant difference. It is suggested that future studies increase the sample size and extend the duration of the intervention to more precisely analyze the interaction between these variables.
