Abstract
Chile cuenta alrededor de 18 millones de habitantes. Del punto de vista étnico, la mayoría
de los chilenos son mestizos (66%), o descendientes de europeos (25%), o de amerindios
(6%). Chile es una tierra de migrantes, hispanohablantes en gran parte,
pero también italohablantes, de habla alemana, croatas en Patagonia y libaneses. Estos
idiomas fueron ignorados por las autoridades chilenas que todavía no valorizan, ni sacan
provecho de este patrimonio de habilidades plurilingüísticas, diseminadas en la sociedad. La
influencia de las reformas educativas ha constituido una dificultad para ampliar la oferta
lingüística, que se trate de idiomas autóctonos o de idiomas extranjeros.
