Abstract
Alrededor de 1800, la lectura se convirtió -gracias a las mejores posibilidades de educación- en una verdadera “moda” que fascinó sobre todo a las mujeres de la clase media. Mayori- tariamente, las mujeres leían novelas y revistas de entretención, y las leían en cantidades enormes, descubriendo el placer por la lectura de temas con los cuales se identificaban, haciéndolo a solas, sin ser observadas. Cartas, diarios y artículos de revistas dan a conocer la enorme importancia que tenía la lectura en la sociedad alrededor de 1800, y nos entregan una idea clara del debate polémico en tomo a la supuesta peligrosidad de la llamada “adicción a la lectura ” de las mujeres de entonces.
