Abstract
The promulgation of the Law of Compulsory Primary Instruction of 1920 is one of the most relevant milestones of Chilean education of the 20th century, although due to contextual issues it remained in the formulation of a policy, rather than in its implementation, it does not take away merit, especially for the high implications it will have on the development of education in the country. What this article seeks is to reveal some antecedents present in the discussion that was triggered during the political decision process for the enactment of the law. Some positions that raised social, economic, institutional, and religious interests, and that at times became arduous, are described in this paper trying to vindicate, describe and analyze, the interventions of free thinkers as key agents, in the generation of this educational milestone.
