Abstract
Works such as Julio Cortázar´s can be read from various perspectives and still remain open for new readings. This article analyses some symbolic functions that are played by the female character and her cat in the short story Orientación de los gatos, with emphasis on the former, whose complex character has different shades and reaches its libertarian apex by transmigrating to another world.
