Abstract

This paper describes some prominent aspects of negation in Romani jorajané spoken in Chile; specifically, the marks that correspond to the negation adverb no in Spanish. The theoretical framework of this study is Functional Empiricism, developed by Garvin (1979[1977]). As for the methodological aspect, a corpus of 2914 verses from Romani New Testament which convey negation was analysed. From the analysis, 5 negation marks were identified in Romani which correspond to the negation adverb no in Spanish. These are: ni, inai, na, nasti and iok. This paper indicates the prominent contexts of use and paradigmatic cases for each of them.
