Abstract
The objectives of this article are to know and analyse the gaps and main challenges faced by Chilean Vocational Technical Education (ESTP) in this century and based on this, propose actions and strategies that provide improvements to the current Vocational Technical Education (ETP) system. A second objective is to identify different aspects of the Mapuche teaching model and their ancestral wisdom that can contribute to the ETP and relate them to the current ETP and propose improvements that allow us to face Chile's challenges in this matter.
To achieve these objectives, the study has been developed in four parts. First, a general description of the Chilean educational system and technical-professional higher education is made, considering its strengths, gaps and challenges from different perspectives. Secondly, the main concepts that support the worldview of the Mapuche people are analysed, emphasizing the value system, the teaching-learning process, educational strategies and identifying the actors who fulfil the role of teacher; Thirdly, those educational practices of the Mapuche people that could contribute and be transferred to technical-professional higher education are identified and finally, the most relevant aspects of the Mapuche educational model are related and improvements to the current Chilean ESTP system are proposed.
