Abstract

Are studied the theoretical range of the Greek concept of tyranny, understood
as institutional anomaly in the specific context of the polis as the basic unit of
organization of the state in classical and archaic Greece is studied. Then notions of
modern tyranny in late medieval political thought and analyzed. To address this problem, an analysis of the reception of the Greek notion of tyranny by Thomas
Aquinas and Niccolo Machiavelli, understanding their assimilation as a key element
of Western political philosophy
