Abstract
Ana Caro’s comedy, Valor, agravio y mujer, stands out for its original and alternative use of gender roles. Through Leonor, the main character, the play questions an essentialist view of gender, and introduces new models for one’s own identity. At the same time, the text makes evident the feminine voice of its author. All these features can be better understood through the play staging and the study of power relations associated to vision –or gaze— as vehicle and means. The pedagogical project proposed in this article combines the analysis of the text with the study of critical theories by Judith Butler, bell hooks, and Michel Foucault. Guided readings and class-discussions are supplemented with the staging of the comedy. In this manner, the students achieve a much deeper reflection and expand the conceptual understanding of the theoretical content of the play in order to incorporate its practical and metatextual aspects.
