Abstract

This article proposes how the use of plays –in particular the comedies of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz— in the elementary education can enrich the dual language classroom in the United States. These programs teach curricular subjects in both students’ first and second language. Even though these programs have been originally developed to support students from Latin American heritage families, instructional strategies often benefit more English speakers. For this reason, it is necessary to provide contents and instructional strategies that support students and enrich their academic Spanish. Through a reflection on the character and the plays of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, we present a project that promotes the development of academic Spanish, beginning from primary school, contributing to promote equity and social justice in dual immersion programs.
