Abstract

Introduction: emotional intelligence is defined as personality traits, emotional competencies and cognitive abilities that allow the understanding and use of one’s emotions, and the understanding of the emotions of others/as. Objective: describe the emotional abilities of Chilean physical education students. Method: 159 physical education students from a university in Santiago de Chile were evaluated. The Rego and Fernández Emotional Intelligence Inventory was applied. Results: Empathy is the emotional ability with the best self-perception in the sample (4,7±0,5), men have better scores in emotional self-control and women have better scores in Empathy and Understanding of the emotions of others. Conclusion: the sample presents medium-high and high levels of self-perception of all emotional skills, with the highest score in Empathy.
