Chilote Witchcraft and the Dynamics of the Refuge Region

Abstract

In 1880, a judicial process initiated in Ancud, whose cause were crimes by the power struggles unveiled an organization of witches controlling Chilote sorcerers and healers. This was organized politically into two areas controlled by two Kings: one ruled the Center-North area of the archipelago from Quicaví and another ruled the east area, having as headquarters the town of Queilén.
This organization called the 'Recta Provincia' has its origins in the ancient indigenous shamanism veliche, part of the Admapu. However, the complexities of its forms are due to acculturation processes and especially to the social processes that occurred on the Isla Grande.
The academic approach, with which this story is built, is based on a frontier between a type of story that seeks to be cultural from an inspiration of the Italian microhistory and a cultural geography.
