Abstract

An inspection of the surface text of a sample of contemporary journalistic discourse associated with the first world, especially the one written in English, for the English-speaking world, reveals that this exhibits features of paternalism to refer to recent events in Latin American countries. Paternalism is understood, following Ericksson Baaz (2005), as a discourse that assumes images of the Self as developed and superior.
