Abstract

The physical self-concept plays a fundamental and decisive role in the personal welfare and in the prevention of disorders and behaviour difficulties (Goñi, Ruz and Rodríguez 2006). The objective of this paper is to determine the factorial validity of a physical self-concept questionnaire in elderly people (CAF-MAY), from the answers of asum total of 132 individuáis divided into three age groups (60 to 69, 70 to 79 and 80 to more years of age). It also intends to confirm if there is a relationship between the dimensions of the physical self-concept questionnaire for elderly people (CAF-MAY) and variables of sex and age. Additionally, it expects to determine if there is a correlation between the five dimensions contained in the CAF-MAY questionnaire: appearance, health/sickness, functional capacity, physical capacity and general physical self-concept. The CAF-MAY questionnaire was self-generated on the basis of the general physical self-concept questionnaire (PSPP-A) by Chase (1991), which was translated into Spanish, adding and discarding items and scales, including format and wording chan- ges. The data obtained confirm an adequate validity of the instrument, albeit improvable in certain Ítems and scales, being appropriate for elderly people.
