Abstract

Chile is one of the countries with the lowest illiteracy rate in South America (4%). This is based on the public policies that have been implemented since the beginning of the Republic (1818 forward) but especially during the 60s in the last century. Nowadays, the average educational level in the country is about 10 years, 98 % of the primary education has been covered and the secondary education is above 80 %.
The aim of this presentation is to explain the main policies adopted by the Chilean State in the last 5 decades and the Chilean experience about the Chilecalifica programme in order to decrease the current level of functional illiteracy.
