Abstract

In this article we analyze, in the first part, the situation of mathematics teachers in Chile in the light of the results of national and international exams where Chilean students have obtained low results, in particular the PISA test. Then the two main tools used to insure the quality of teachers are shown to fail in evaluating the specific characteristics that mathematics teachers should have. In the second part, we propose the use of Standards in order to improve the quality in the formation of future mathematics teachers. Following from the Standards already developed for the formation of high school teachers of mathematics, we propose to implement these ideas for middle and elementary school, and even for pre-school teachers. In the case of middle school teachers we make some specific remarles about the main axis around which the standard should be formulated. It is proposed to advance in a major importance of the mathematic subjeets in all aspeets of
disciplinary and pedagogical formation.
