Abstract

This research had the purpose to design and validate an instrument to evalúate the elaboration depth and structural organization of the learning of Biology. The conclusions were drawn according to the type of response obtained from a student in front of certain questions. The whole research was supported on the theoretical framework of SOLO Taxonomy. The evaluation instrument was constituted by 4 questions structured as a complex question, which was administered to 9th graders of the Scientific- Humanistic Education Plan in Osorno. A variety of validation procedures of the complex questions were performed, such as the expert’s criterion, interjudges, reduced sample application, Gutman’s Scale Coeffícient and Scott’s Easiness Coefficient.
The questions of the test -built in manner of complex question structure—were useful to assign levels of SOLO response. Its results confirmed that the Scale and Easiness Coefficients determined the hierarchical structure of the students’ responses, exactly as it was postulated in the theoretical framework. The evaluation of learning of Sciences (Biology) manifested levels of students’ responses considering its organization and depth. It required assigning levels of comprehension and, consequently, to attribute qualities to the learning acquired.
