Effects of Self-Selected Music on Motivation and Physical Performance in Gym Users from Colombia

Abstract

This article analyzes the effects of self-selected music on motivation and physical performance among individuals engaging in physical activity at Halcón Fit Gym Box and Torres Fit Gym in Garzón, Huila. A quasi-experimental study with a quantitative approach was conducted using pretest–posttest assessments on a sample of 132 participants (52.2% men and 47.8% women). Variables related to strength, endurance, flexibility, and intrinsic motivation were measured using tests from the Eurofit protocol and the Brunel Music Rating Inventory-2 (BMRI-2). The results showed statistically significant improvements (p < .05) in all physical capacities, as well as an increase in motivational perception when participants trained while listening to music of their preference. It is concluded that self-selected music functions as an ergogenic and emotional stimulus that enhances physical performance, reduces perceived exertion, and strengthens adherence to exercise.
