Abstract

This article explores how the way women incorporate time into their narratives of experiences influences their decision not to abandon their academic careers. Through a unique case study of a pregnant doctoral student who faced the sudden death of her mother, we document two different ways of incorporating time into the narrative. The first involves stopping time, which creates a point of stillness in the continuity of life events. The second involves restoring time, which helps to repair the broken continuity. Data were collected through an autobiographical narrative and analyzers combining content and semiotic analysis. The results suggest that these ways of incorporating time into narratives of experiences allow them to operate as cultural tools that help women not to abandon their doctoral training.
